The Sacrifice of Christmas

Rev. Dr. Tunde Oladimeji, preaching from Matthew 2:13–23 and Hebrews 2:10–18, reminds us that there is always a price to pay for anything truly good, and the greatest example of this is God’s love for the world. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son” (John 3:16). God did not hesitate to give what was most precious to Him so that humanity could be saved.

This costly love is reflected in the obedience of Mary and Joseph. Mary surrendered her future and reputation when she declared, “I am the Lord’s servant; let it be according to Your will.” She endured misunderstanding, gossip, and uncertainty. Joseph, a righteous man, chose compassion over public shame, protecting Mary even before he fully understood the truth of her pregnancy. When God revealed His will, Joseph obeyed immediately, setting aside personal plans and embracing the responsibility of protecting both Mary and the child.

The journey did not become easier after Jesus’ birth. Herod’s violent opposition forced the holy family to flee, yet even in the face of danger, God intervened to preserve His divine plan. Human schemes could not stop what God had ordained. As Hebrews reminds us, Jesus fully entered our suffering so that He could redeem us, becoming both our Savior and faithful High Priest.

This sermon affirms a powerful truth: no matter what happens around us, God’s will cannot be thwarted. Obedience may be costly, and faith may require sacrifice, but God remains sovereign. Even in hardship, fear, and uncertainty, His purposes will stand—and His saving plan will always move forward
