Led by the Star!

Rev. Dr. Tunde Oladimeji preached on Jeremiah 31:7–14 and Matthew 2:1–12, exploring the meaning of Epiphany—the manifestation and revelation of Jesus Christ to the world. Epiphany reminds us that Jesus is not hidden; He is revealed to all who are willing to seek Him.

The Magi, likely arriving from the East after a long and costly journey, followed a mysterious star that God placed in the heavens. Though often referred to as “three wise men,” their arrival was likely a large caravan, symbolizing the seriousness of their spiritual quest. These Gentile seekers—possibly influenced by the Jewish faith through Daniel’s connection to the Persian Empire—were open to God’s leading in ways the religious leaders of Jerusalem were not. While Herod and the theologians lived only miles away from Bethlehem, they showed little interest, revealing that proximity to truth does not guarantee a responsive heart.

The Magi followed the light God provided and offered their best to Jesus—gifts that pointed to His kingship, priesthood, and sacrifice. Their story reminds us that God’s love is universal, crossing boundaries of culture, ethnicity, status, and geography. Wise people still seek and worship God, stepping out in faith even when the path is uncertain.

This Epiphany message challenges us to trust God enough to follow His leading in the new year. Are we willing to step into uncertainty, keep an eternal perspective, and give our best to Christ? As we follow the light of Jesus, we are also called to reflect that light—sharing His hope and love with everyone around us.
